The surveyors' trust inaugural IP Award 2020

The Directors of The Surveyors’ Trust are delighted to announce that applications for the inaugural Intellectual Property Award are now open.

Registered companies and individuals who meet the competition eligibility, are invited to apply for the Award. The winner, as chosen by The Surveyors’ Trust Board, will be awarded $50,000.

Key competition dates

  • Competition opens 2 September 2019
  • Competition closes 5pm AEST 28 March 2020
  • Winner announced at the Locate Conference 28-30 April 2020 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre

Application eligibility and important information

  • Entries must be from companies registered in Australia or individuals who are Australian citizens
  • Individuals must seek approval from their employer prior to entering. The applicant should provide a letter from their employer stating their role, duration of employment and knowledge of the competition entry together with the full consent to enter the competition and receive the prize in their personal name
  • Competition is open to professional services firms including, but not limited to, accounting, legal, surveying, architectural and engineering organisations
  • The nominated project(s) must be related to fostering intellectual property for the surveying industry (see selection criteria below)
  • Project must have been worked on in the past two years, however consideration will be given to projects conducted in the past five years that have had a significant and positive impact on intellectual property for the surveying industry
  • Application to not exceed 10 A4 pages, but attachments may be submitted
  • Applications to be submitted via The Surveyors’ Trust website

Selection criteria

The Board of The Surveyors’ Trust will consider all applications received by 5pm AEST 28 March 2020 that foster and promote the recognition and / or protection of intellectual property in the surveying industry in Australia.

Projects must identify activities that have positively impacted the surveying industry through the following:

  • Creation, identification and definition of new intellectual property
  • Management of existing intellectual property
  • Commercialisation of intellectual property
  • Protection of intellectual property
  • Raising awareness of surveying and spatial intellectual property

Projects can include, and aren’t limited to:

  • Professional services advice or projects commissioned by clients
  • Industry events
  • New systems and software
  • New products or services
  • Patentable inventions

Project promotion

The winning entry will be widely promoted in national press leading to additional PR benefits for the successful firm or individual. Please ensure that any third party clients have approved the use and communication of any nominated project and project information.

The winner will be requested to present information on their project at The Surveyors’ Trust 2020 Christmas party (first Friday in December), provide an interview to the Trust’s podcast and be available for media comment. Further expectations are outlined in the attached Terms and Conditions.
